Dear Members and Friends,
We would like to welcome the hundreds of new members who joined GSI this month. What a wonderful way to start the New Year. Welcome to our extended family!
There are many survivor family groups that have the word “generation” in their title and it is easy to get them confused. Generations of the Shoah International (GSI) is an all-volunteer organization that has neither president nor spokesperson. There is no charge for membership or for posting public programs, inquiries or searches. GSI does not request dues or donations and is dedicated to freely sharing information and resources with others. We have participated / assisted with conferences and public events, conducted speaker training seminars to help children and grandchildren learn to speak effectively about the Holocaust and lobbied Congress on behalf of survivors. GSI played a major role to make caring for survivor needs a top priority for the 46 nations involved in the Holocaust Era Assets Conference in Prague.
Our GSI Facebook group is very international. Membership is open and we welcome you to participate. This group is what you make of it and wonderful people are doing exciting work that they are sharing online. If you wish to communicate with someone in our Facebook group all you have to do is click on their photo or name to be directed to their personal page to speak with them directly. You will not be able to see anyone’s profile unless you are a “friend” of theirs, but you can communicate.
We are introducing a new resource on our website. Peter Landé compiled a “how to” guide for researching Holocaust genealogy and has graciously offered to make it available to everyone. To see this guide, which first appeared in the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington (www.jewishgen.org/JGSGW/) newsletter Mishpacha: www.genshoah.org/pdfs/How_%20to.pdf
The members of the GSI Coordinating Council; Anat Bar-Cohen (MD), Dan Brooks (NY), Dina Cohen (NJ), Ken Engel (MN), Esther Toporek Finder (MD), Klaire Firestone (CA), Sandy Hoffman (WI), Pepi Nichols (TX), Doris Schwarz-Lisenbee (CA), Charley Silow (MI), Bonnie Stein (FL), Barbara Wind (NJ), and webmaster Anna Schiffer wish all of you the best for 2010. Hopefully this will be a year of peace.
Generations of the Shoah International (GSI)

RESTITUTION
From the HSF-USA website: A powerful Friend of the Court brief by eminent constitutional and foreign policy law professors has been filed in the pending Generali appeal. The brief argues in support of plaintiffs-survivors seeking the overturn of a 2004 District Court decision blocking suits against the large Italian insurer accused of failing to honor Holocaust-era policies. http://hsf-usa.org/Brief%20Amici%20Curiae%20on%20Behalf%20of%20Professors%20of%20Constitutional%20Law%20and%20Foreign%20Relations%20Law%20of%20the%20US%2012-18-09.pdf
Attorney Sam Dubbin, who serves as counsel to HSF, filed a response on behalf of plaintiffs in the Generali appeal to the Department of Justice brief in late October. The response challenges basic arguments and omissions made by the government. http://hsf-usa.org/Letter%20Brief%20for%20Plaintiff-Appellant%20Dr.%20Thomas%20Weiss%2012-18-09.pdf
ANNOUNCEMENTSFrom the United Nations (UN)
The 2010 observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust will focus on a central theme that emphasizes the legacy that survivors will pass on to succeeding generations. The theme, “Holocaust Remembrance: the Legacy of Survival”, will highlight the moral messages expressed by those who have suffered from Nazi persecution and denial of basic human rights. As there are fewer survivors to tell their stories today, it is of primary importance that these universal lessons be shared. Only this will ensure that their legacy will continue to promote respect for diversity and human rights for generations to come. [See upcoming events section below.]
From Yad Vashem
A new online exhibit, “Heartstrings, Music of the Holocaust”, highlights music created in the ghettos, camps and partisan camps. A section about composer Shmerk Kaczerginski highlights his work in the Vilna ghetto where he wrote songs; directed theater productions and literary evenings; and was actively involved in partisan activities. Later, while in the forest, he began documenting the stories and songs that he had written and heard. After the war he continued this work and became an expert in the area, recording 60 songs sung by Holocaust survivors. The songs in this exhibition are part of those recordings, which are now preserved in the Yad Vashem Archives.
“Anonymous No Longer:” In creating the permanent exhibition for the new Holocaust History Museum, Yad Vashem sought to introduce an emphasis on the fate of the individual during the Holocaust. Identifying the men, women and children in the photographic display rescues these unknown faces from anonymity. Since the new Museum was inaugurated in 2005, survivors and individuals have come forward and identified themselves, their relatives and acquaintances in the photographs on display. “Anonymous No Longer” presents the names of those who have been identified. In cases where the same individual has been identified differently by different people, all relevant identifications have been included
"Virtual Shtetl" is devoted to the Jewish history of Poland. Currently, our portal is a source of information but future plans include a system by which Internet users will interact with each other. It will create a link between Polish-Jewish history and the contemporary, multi-cultural world. This museum without barriers is a consequent extension of the real Museum. Its main objective is to provide a unique social forum for everyone interested in Polish-Jewish life. The "Virtual Shtetl" re-tells the history of Polish Jews which existed, to a great extent, in a town or a village (Yiddish: shtetl) more>>

Now is the time to be included in the Benjamin and Vladka Meed Registry of Holocaust Survivors at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Through its International Holocaust Survivors Outreach Project, the Registry seeks to rescue the evidence worldwide by expanding its search for Holocaust survivors while there is still time. Since 1993, the Meed Registry, which maintains the most comprehensive listing of Holocaust survivors in the world, has provided valuable information to thousands of survivors worldwide, and in some cases has succeeded in re-uniting friends and family members from the Holocaust era. Inclusion in the Registry is voluntary and assures that the names of survivors will be preserved for the historical record and memory. Family members can register survivors posthumously. To protect the privacy of survivors and their families, the Registry’s database is not searchable online. Visit our website at www.ushmm.org/registry for further information and to download registration forms in any of the 19 languages available. For more information, contact Jaime J. Monllor, International Outreach Officer, Tel. 202-488-2692, E-mail: jmonllor@ushmm.org

FYI: For your information
- FYI… From the American Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Service
During 2009 the Tracing Center found 61 people alive, helped more than 150 survivors prove their internment in concentration and forced labor camps and uncovered information concerning the fates of more than 1,500 victims of the Holocaust. Our work is more than just numbers. This year a woman learned that not only did her sister survive the Holocaust but her brother did as well. The result was a family reunion between three generations 66 years in the making. The past year also brought the reopening of more than 10,000 requests that were previously closed due to lack of information. So far, close to 2,000 of those requests have been successfully resolved, and the information has been delivered to the survivors. For more: lklein@ARC-CMC.ORG

"The demand for the cookbook has been overwhelming" says cookbook creator Joanne Caras, of Port St Lucie, Florida. “But now we are looking for even more stories so that our second cookbook can be as big and as good as the original. Anyone who is a Holocaust Survivor or who knows a Survivor whom they would like to honor can do so by sending us their story and one or two family recipes to include in the second volume of our cookbook. We would also ask them to send us a photo from the wartime as well as a more recent photo of the Survivor and their family." Stories, photos, and recipes can be sent to: survivorcookbook@aol.com

Also: A gentile author with a keen interest in presenting a balanced view of the events of the middle of the twentieth century as they impacted on gay men is seeking funds and sources for his research. The project focuses on the Nazi Holocaust and the Gulags of Stalin's Russia. For more: socorra@mac.com - FYI… I am a journalist from Berlin tracking the fate of Mr. Alfred Traub (b. July 7, 1904) who died in a concentration camp in Poland. I am searching for his brother Edmund (b. 1894) who emigrated to Australia in 1938 and also for eyewitnesses from Majdanek, where Alfred was incarcerated from April-June 1942. Edmund lived on Gloucester Str., Prospect South Australia and could have children and grand children. I want to set a memorial stone in Berlin for the Traub family but many details are still unknown. ---Wolf Thieme WolfThieme@t-online.de
- FYI… From Noah Lederman, a 3G: For the past few years I've been writing my grandparents' story. It's called My Grandparents' Holocaust and it is the story of their survival intertwined with my efforts to uncover the past they had kept so secret. I have a blog, which features videos and excerpts from the book: www.mygrandparentsholocaust.blogspot.com
