Generations of the Shoah International Newsletter
October 2009
gsi@genshoah.org
www.genshoah.org
Dear Members and Friends,
This month GSI celebrates its 7th anniversary. We started with nine people representing second generation groups in seven cities and now reach tens of thousands of people around the world. We are all volunteers and remain committed to sharing information and resources throughout the survivor community.
Membership is always free and there is no charge for posting public programs in our newsletters. We do not solicit money for ourselves but if you feel well served by GSI we encourage you to make a donation to the Holocaust organization / institutions of your choice. In these hard economic times the Jewish social service agencies that help needy survivors and the museums / memorials that help keep the legacy alive are having financial difficulties so anything you can donate would be helpful.
In addition to our newsletters, we offer a leadership listserv that connects representatives of survivor, second and third generation groups. We use this listserv to keep people informed on news that comes up between newsletters. Leaders in the survivor community can use this vehicle to communicate immediately and directly with each other. Groups are welcome to send a representative to join this listserv. Please contact us at gsi@genshoah.org.
We also offer an intergenerational Facebook group that allows members to communicate with each other. Everyone is welcome to join the Facebook group. There are instructions on how to join our Facebook group in the box below.
GSI is unique. Our growth and outreach reflect our dedication to the survivor community. In the last year we have expanded our connections and now work with diplomats and statesmen from various countries. A member of the GSI Coordinating Council had the honor of being the only representative from the survivor community speaking about caring for aging survivors from the perspective of our families at the Holocaust Era Assets Conference in Prague in June.
GSI-New Jersey was the first Holocaust survivor family group to hold a joint conference with a State Holocaust Commission in the USA. GSI has conducted speaker-training programs around the US to help children and grandchildren of survivors enhance their Holocaust presentations to schools and religious institutions. We regularly participate in international conferences. For years GSI has been the bridge between the survivor community and the major Holocaust-related organizations / institutions worldwide. This network continues to expand and strengthen.
We thank you for your support. Without word of mouth and your personal recommendations we would not have been able to reach so many people. We have worked hard to earn your respect and promise to continue to work for the survivor community. Please continue to spread the word about GSI. Please continue to spread the word about GSII and forward our newsletters to anyone who might find them interesting.
To ensure that our website is accurate and up to date, we ask survivor, second and third generation groups to please check our website at www.genshoah.org/2g3g.html. to see if the name of your group and your contact information are correct. If changes are necessary, please
Kristallnacht commemorations are coming so please send us your program information so we can include it in the next edition of the newsletter.
Generations of the Shoah International (GSI)
Membership in our interactive leadership listserv is open to leaders / representatives of landsmanschaft groups. If your local survivor, second generation or third generation group has not yet delegated a representative to join the GSI interactive online discussion / listserv group, please join us now. We already have dozens of members throughout the US and from other countries. This global interactive listserv is the fastest way to reach the survivor community should issues / concerns arise: gsi@genshoah.org.
For event submissions: www.genshoah.org/contact_gsi.html. Please fill out the information requested in the text areas and submit it to us at gsi@genshoah.org. Kindly do not to wait until the last minute. Send us your information later than the 23rd of the month month if you wish for it to appear in the upcoming month’s issue.
Visit our GSI website at www.genshoah.org for updated information on new books, films, helpful links to Holocaust-related organizations and institutions, etc. Survivors, their children and grandchildren are welcome to post contact information for their local groups on our website.

New York State Banking Department’s Holocaust Claims Processing Office Since 1996 the State of New York has played an integral role in helping individuals, of all backgrounds and regardless of their current residence, obtain a measure of just resolution for the theft of property during the reign of the Nazi regime. The Holocaust Claims Processing Office (“HCPO”) of the New York State Banking Department was created on June 25, 1997 to provide institutional assistance to individuals seeking to recover assets lost due to Nazi persecution.
The mission of the office is threefold: 1) recover assets deposited in banks; 2) recover proceeds of unpaid insurance policies issued by European insurers; and 3) recover art lost, looted, or sold under duress between 1933 and 1945. Moreover, all of our services are provided free of charge. There is no fee for a claimant to utilize our services, nor does the HCPO take a percentage of the value of the assets recovered. The goal of the HCPO is to advocate for claimants by helping to alleviate any cost and bureaucratic hardships they might encounter in trying to pursue claims on their own.
For more information about the HCPO or to initiate a claim please call 1-800-695-3318 or visit our website at www.claims.state.ny.us/index.htm.

If you have documented proof of looted art that is offered for sale in the US you can contact the US Department of Homeland Security Immigration & Customs Enforcement office in New York. Contact Bonnie Goldblatt: bonnie.goldblatt@dhs.gov.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
From Yad Vashem
Special Rosh Hashanah Message from Rabbi Lau, Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council, drawing on biblical sources, delivers an inspirational drasha (homily) on the importance of commemorating the Jews who perished during the Shoah. Rabbi Lau, himself a child survivor of Buchenwald, calls upon Jews across the world to join Yad Vashem's efforts to recover the names of each individual Shoah victim by filling out Pages of Testimony in their memory and submitting them to Yad Vashem. This is a race against time. Act now before those who still remember them are gone forever. Search for information or submit names of people who perished during the Shoah on Yad Vashem's Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names.
