RESTITUTION
Regarding Belgian compensation:
Many of you have been reading in newspapers [see also below] around the world about a “newly” announced Belgian compensation program of $170 million for looted, lost or abandoned assets. This money refers to the sum that was allocated to the Buysse Commission some years ago, and this latest press release was made upon the recent issuance of the Buysse Commission’s final report. (You can read all about it at www.combuysse.fgov.be.) In short, there is no new Belgian compensation. Jews who survived the war in Belgium will not be getting any new or additional money, and the decisions of the Buysse Commission (now completed) or of the ongoing Solidarity 3000 program (past deadline for application) remain unchanged.
Regarding Holocaust Era Insurance claims (HR 1746)
We have been advised that there will be hearing in the Senate in April on HR 1746 chaired by Senator Bill Nelson of Florida, former insurance commissioner of Florida and member of the ICHEIC board. Check the website of (Holocaust Survivors Foundation) HSF-USA for updates: http://hsf-usa.org/

The United States Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nation's annual commemoration of the Holocaust, just as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is our permanent living memorial to the victims. The Museum has designated "Do Not Stand Silent: Remembering Kristallnacht 1938" as the focus for the 2008 observance. On Wednesday April 30, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. please join us for the Names Reading Ceremony in the Museum’s Hall of Remembrance. Help read aloud the names of Holocaust victims. Add your voice, along with Museum visitors and staff, and honor the memory of those who suffered. Reservations are not required, but timeslots are available in 15-minute increments beginning at 10:30 a.m. Call us at (202) 479-9737 or e-mail VolunteerView@ushmm.org for questions or to make a reservation.

On January 17th, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum launched a search service to access the International Tracing Service material. Holocaust survivors and their families can send research requests to the Museum and staff will look for information in the ITS records as well as the Museum’s additional documents. The Museum’s on-line form can be found on its website at www.ushmm.org/its or call toll free at 866-912-4385. The Museum hopes to have searches completed in six to eight weeks.
To date, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has received over 4,000 search requests of the International Tracing Service records. To initiate a search, please visit the Museum’s website at www.ushmm.org and follow the prompts with the International Tracing Service story.
From Capitol Hill…
Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) have introduced the Simon Wiesenthal Holocaust Education Assistance Act (HR 1092 and S 963 respectively). This bill would authorize the Department of Education to give grants of $2,000,000 a year, for the next five years, to educational organizations to supplement their Holocaust programs. The Holocaust is a very difficult subject to teach. This material requires great care and expertise. Often educators who teach the Holocaust need special training and assistance. By providing additional resources, this bill would give more teachers and students the opportunity to meaningfully engage in this material. Please call your Senators and Representatives and ask them to cosponsor the Simon Wiesenthal Holocaust Education Assistance Act. The current list of Senate cosponsors can be found here. The current list of House cosponsors can be found here. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Jared Feldman (202) 212-6036 or by email, jfeldman@thejcpa.org.

FYI: For your information
- FYI… From the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) The Division of Education of the USHMM seeks to train the nation’s teachers to encourage their students to learn about the Holocaust, to reflect on its meaning for today, and then to act responsibly as members of the national and global community. Currently our programs, both in Washington, DC and around the country, reach thousands of educators every year. Participants in our programs also form a connection to our Museum that will continue to grow throughout their careers. For more information see June 22, 2008 conference listing above or visit the website: www.ushmm.org/education/foreducators/prodev/belfer/2008/.
- FYI… Founded in 1974, Bet Tzedek’s mission is to ensure “equal justice for all.” One of the nation’s premier public interest law firms, Bet Tzedek, “The House of Justice” in Hebrew, is renowned as one of a handful of agencies in the world to offer free legal help to Holocaust survivors who are applying for reparations, pensions, and benefits offered by Germany and other European countries. Bet Tzedek established the first pro bono “Ghetto Work” Reparations legal clinic in Los Angeles, in response to the German government’s creation of a new reparations program in October 2007. The program provides a one-time €2,000 Euro (nearly $3,000 US) payment to Holocaust survivors who worked while living in a German-controlled Ghetto. The German government estimates that there are at least 50,000 Holocaust survivors alive today who may qualify for these new reparations funds, with approximately 20,000 of those survivors living in the United States. For further information about the Holocaust Ghetto Work Reparations Program or to serve as a pro bono lawyer volunteer, contact Bet Tzedek Legal Services at ebarrett@bettzedek.org or Stan Levy at slevy@manatt.com. www.ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/focus/antisemitism/voices/transcript/index.php?content=20080313- FYI… There is new project underway to make a Memorial for Babi Yar. "Requiem" pays tribute to the hundred thousand lives lost at Babi Yar by creating a 75 foot wide, 11 ft deep walk-through pit filled with a powerful sculptural representation of the event. Every life in the pit tells a story- some died alone, some with family, some were old, some were infants; all were undeserving of such a fate. Please visit the website at www.babiyarrequiem.com to see complete details about the project. To see more of the sculptor’s work: www.cjacksonsculpture.com. - FYI… Post-Holocaust Reconciliation Project in German Schools
For the two years I have been presenting lectures/workshops to German students. My goal is to foster a better understanding and relationship between the German and Jewish communities that in turn will help fight anti-Semitism and other forms of prejudice. My project aims to help German gymnasium students come to terms with their legacy -- both the constructive and destructive aspects – and help them incorporate lessons that will in turn extend pluralism and common democratic values. If anyone knows of any schools in Berlin, or elsewhere in Germany, who may have interest in the workshops, as described above, please contact Geoffrey S. Cahn, Ph.D. Geoffcahn@aol.com- FYI… In Mexico Dr. Enrique Krauze is conducting a research project about Jewish life in / around Wyszkow, Poland. Anyone who has information about this community, pre-war, during the Shoah or post-war, including documents, letters, anecdotes, etc, is asked to contact Frida at areleyiddish@prodigy.net.mx. Researchers are especially interested in contacting survivors and family members from this area.
- FYI… Seeking…
I am a teacher doing research on the International DP Children's Center, Kloster Indersdorf Germany 1945-1948 and would like to contact survivors of the Holocaust, or their relatives, who were in Kloster Indersdorf for some period of time between 1945-1948. Today there is a school in this old monastery and the students and teachers would like to learn from the experiences of the Holocaust survivors. I would like to organize a reunion of all the child survivors from Indersdorf for the end of July 2008. To that end, certain survivors are sought by their friends: Herbert and Walter Hahn, brothers, born in Vienna, 3 years at Terezin together with Hans Neumann (who is now looking for them), and Szlama Vexler, survived the Holocaust in underground caves in Polish Ukraine and attended a reunion in New York City at the beginning of the 1950s - his friend Michael Roth looks for him. Please contact Anna Andlauer at: andlauer@onlinehome.de if you are a child survivor who was in Kloster Indersdorf or if you have information on the people above.- FYI… Seeking…
I am seeking my sister Klara Strudler from LVOV who disappeared after being captured by the Gestapo on Aug 4th 1942. Her date of birth: 26.07.1924. If you have any information: Alisa Caspi noritsheps@bezeqint.net- FYI… The young man who corresponded with many Holocaust survivors around the US has passed away.
