Generations of the Shoah International Newsletter
January 2007
GSI@genshoah.org
www.genshoah.org

Dear Members and Friends,
It has come to our attention that some people are under the misconception that GSI receives funding / grant money. GSI is totally non-funded and those involved volunteer their time. The comprehensive newsletter is distributed online via the Internet making it unnecessary for printing and mailing costs. We do not compete with survivors or Holocaust institutions for valuable donations / funds / grants.

Due to the current issues surrounding the Bad Arolsen archive and compensation for survivors and the Holocaust denial conference in Tehran, there is an extensive list of recent news articles in the FYI section. The segment CBS news aired on their 60 Minutes program about the Holocaust archive at Bad Arolsen is available online: www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=2274705n

The issues surrounding the Bad Arolsen archive have particular import for survivors and their descendants. A number of court cases, including the Generali case cited below, are impacted by the fact that many survivors and their families have not had access to the vital information sealed in the archive. The Coordinating Committee of GSI has written a letter to Congress and the media asking the lawyers involved to request courts to stop proceedings until the archive information is made available so that survivors and families can determine their status regarding these cases. We encourage all of you to join us in this effort. The letter, along with contact information, is available at www.genshoah.org/write.html. You are welcome to use the letter as a sample and copy/modify it for your use.

We would like to welcome new GSI member organization ESRA in Vienna, Austria. There is information about this social service agency that works with Holocaust survivors below in the FYI section.

For event submissions: www.genshoah.org/contact_gsi.html. Please fill out the information requested in the text areas and submit it to us at GSI@genshoah.org. Remember not to wait until the last minute to submit your information. Send us your information at least a week before we distribute your newsletters.

Visit our GSI website at www.genshoah.org. We have updated information on new books, films, television programs, etc. You will also find helpful links to Holocaust-related organizations and institutions on our website. Survivors, their children and grandchildren are welcome to post contact information for their local groups on our website.

We wish all of you the best for 2007.

FYI… from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum continues to build its collection of original photographs, documents, and artifacts relating to the experiences of the Holocaust in Europe, Palestine, the Far East, and the Americas. In order to continue to document the Holocaust accurately, authentically, and powerfully, the Museum seeks original material about the onset of Nazi terror, persecution and atrocities, the American and world responses, armed and spiritual resistance and rescue, liberation, and the reestablishment of life after the Holocaust. We are looking for original documents, letters, diaries, artwork, music, photographs, clothing, religious materials, memorial (yizkor) books, personal artifacts, toys, historic film footage, home movies, and other artifacts that were kept with you, created, and/or used throughout the time period surrounding the Holocaust. If you have materials that you would like to bring to our attention, contact Kyra Schuster: kschuster@ushmm.org, phone: 202-488-2649
FYI… Travel to places of the Holocaust

Ideas & Suggestions
Several groups have employed the idea of "books and bagels" where members decide on a book that has a Holocaust theme and meet to discuss what they read. They meet for a breakfast or lunch every few months. It is a relaxed atmosphere where people can get together to share ideas. NEXT GENERATIONS in Boca Raton, FL and the Holocaust Council of MetroWest in Whippany, NJ do this with success. See above in the Upcoming Events section for the January 17th and 21st programs for book ideas.
